The plume model was proposed to explain the occurrence of intraplate volcanism; volcanism that is not directly linked to rifting, or subduction of tectonic plates. This model can provide an explanation for the occurrence of the highly refractory domains seen at Magnet Cove and elsewhere (See accompanying model), yet the current age data is ambiguous at best in confirmation of this model. There are decreasing age trends from NW to SE, but in some areas there are overlapping trends that proceed from the NE to SW. There is also no visible large scale regional uplift in the lithosphere as one would expect with a plume, however there has been significant erosion of the overlying strata and such a feature may have once existed.
